Big news for photographers

As of November 5, 2007, drivebyshooter.net will no longer be updated. For posts on photography, you can now go to LightChasers Photography. For the author's personal site, head over to the Dark Corner.

I saw an article in my feed last week about the Sigma APO 200-500mm f/2.8 EX DG - I ignored it. I was so busy writing about WordPress 2.1.2, Sony’s monsters, and other photography news that I didn’t realize just how big this was.

It’s a good thing Rico emailed me about it - this thing is huge! I mean, it’s colossal.

You want to know how big? Words escape me now, just read on to see what I pasted from the original article.

Sigma APO 200-500mm f/2.8

Massive, enormous, gigantic - come up with as many synonyms as you’d like. The word that keeps coming to mind is huge.

You want details on the lens? You won’t find them here. Instead, you can head over to Shutter Box Philippines or to Digital Photography Review. All I’m really going to say here is this: that thing is huge.

It practically looks like a whale… you think it comes with its own tripod? :-o

  2. DBS Says:

It looks like a whale? It is a whale.

I doubt it’ll come with its own tripod, but I wouldn’t put this on anything other than a Manfrotto or similarly built pod.

  3. Rico Says:

Manfrotto? What’s that, some super strong tripod or something?

And how can lens this big not come with its own tripod?

  4. DBS Says:

Manfrotto is one of the top manufacturers camera & light support equipment.

As for the Sigma not having its own tripod, that simply isn’t their core strength. They make lenses - and they should leave making camera supports to those who do that better.

I remember Greenspun’s words over at photo.net about the Nikon 300mm/F2.8: “Let’s not mince words: if you have a small penis, this is the lens for you.” I guess this quote applies to this lens better. Sigma seems to have built this lens for bragging rights — this whale of a lens even dwarfs the infamous Sigmonster.

  6. DBS Says:

Yeah, one of the first things I thought of when i saw this was how it was meant just to show off. I’m sure it’s a fine lens, but I can’t help but think it’s also meant to draw attention to its own size.

So, anybody out there need a penis extension?

  7. yuga Says:

How much for that penis extension? hehehe

  8. DBS Says:

£899.99 (PHP85,138.10) according to Park Cameras Online

  9. Rico Says:

Is there really any practical use for this kind of lens? I mean, you do pretty fine with three set of lens(?) and them speedlites…

  10. DBS Says:

Wildlife, I think, but it would have to be mounted on a vehicle. I don’t think you’d want to be carrying this when the animals you’re shooting start paying attention to you.

Celebrity stalking too… and again, you don’t want them chasing you.

Holy lord! that’s HUGE. for a minute there, i thought this was just photoshoped.

  13. DBS Says:

    I thought it was a fake too… I’m sure it’s real though.

The camera it’s mounted on looks tiny. I think it might be better to say the camera is mounted on the lens.

  14. Shutter Box PHilippines Says:

    @Elber,

That is not a camera… that is a lens cap hahaha!

    just kidding ;-)

The Sigma isn’t the biggest lens though ;-)
