One of my images on Flickr has gotten a whole lot of attention lately. It has gotten almost 10,000 views in the past few days and I didn’t know why - that is, until now.

My image has been Dugg.

Well, maybe that isn’t entirely accurate. You could say it got dragged along when a story on lifehack.org got dugg.

Confused? So was I, but I finally got to the bottom of it. You can read the story below.

Let’s start at the beginning. Over a year ago, I posted the image you see above on a little site called Flickr. As part of the image description, I wrote: “my not-quite-a-survival-kit kit.”

I eventually got tired of carrying the box and kept some of the contents. The picture, in the meantime, stayed online. It got just over 1,000 views, but for the most part attracted little attention.

A few weeks ago, another little site called lifehack.org stirred things up. It seems that a little site called lifehack.org wrote about a 10 day survival pack for your vehicle. For some reason, my image was prominently displayed alongside the article. Yes, my image of a “not-quite-a-survival-kit kit” was attached to an article on a 10 day survival pack for your vehicle. That, along with the prominent Digg widget, spelled trouble.

Now what probably should have happened is that people clicked on the link to backwoodshome.com to learn more about the survival pack. The thing is, if you check the image on the left, that link is buried by other text, Google Ads included.

Instead, most people found my image on Flickr, several people missed the $25 survival pack, and quite a number of people dugg the entry.

As a result, I ended up with over 10,000 views on my image, a handful of hilarious comments, and one funny story.

On another note, something I touched on earlier, I don’t carry this kit anymore.  I’ve kept the duct tape and the cash stash, but I’ve discarded pretty much everything else.
