Since I posted photos of the PhUV, several people have left comments on the vehicle. Quite a number have posed some questions. I hope the following literature will address most of the questions asked.

On that note, I might as well put in my two cents worth. The PhUV, you see, is a prototype - I’ve described at as a proof of concept. It proves that we can produce a vehicle locally, and proves that we can produce it for under half a million pesos.

Yes, some of the parts looked cheap. No, the vehicle was not completely or cleanly finished. Yes, it could have benefited from quite a deal of detailing. Keep in mind thought that the vehicle presented was, like I mentioned, a prototype. It was proof that we can do this.

As the vehicle moves closer to mass production, more improvements will start coming. We can start mass-producing curved panels, fine-tune the design, and clean up those little flaws that everybody picks on.

Having said all that, I’ll shut up and leave you to read the literature on the PhUV. [more…]

Yesterday I ranted about the quality of political ads in the Philippines. Today, I’m sharing some information I have on elections. It might not be much, but my point is this - I shouldn’t rant if I don’t offer some sort of solution or some kind of way to improve the situation.

Now, the things I will mention will not necessarily improve political ads, but I think they just might give is more information about our candidates - at least more information than they can (try to) sing to you in a jingle.

So, here goes:

I wonder why our own political ads couldn’t be more like this. I admit - it doesn’t really present any tangible solutions to Argentina’s ills, but it’s still so much better than any crappy jingle Philippine politicians use.

Almost every creative person has, at some point, been asked to do work for free. I know I have. If you’re the creative type, there will always be people who will approach you and ask you to submit your work to them in exchange for experience, exposure, future jobs, and basically, nothing. People will ask you to give them your time and effort - and in return, they will give you a pat on the back. My advice to you - ask for payment. If you can’t get that, turn around and walk away.

Who am I to talk though? Let’s hear from other, more respectable types.

U-Turn: Red SlamA team of Integrated Marketing Communication students from the University of Asia and the Pacific took the AdSpeak 2007 competition by storm recently by taking the top three slots in the print ad category. The team, composed of IMC seniors Nicole Balaoing, Cis Ganuelas, Ralph Mariano, Pao Pielago, and Punky Taguines, received their awards at the AdSpeak student convention last Friday, February 16, at the Student Center Auditorium at Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

U-Turn: Drive Fast / Die FastThe competition, a joint effort of Letran’s Institute of Communication and the Advertising Board of the Philippines, sought the best public service announcements (PSAs) from delegates of the AdSpeak in three categories: print, radio, and television. In the print category, a total of 138 entries were in competition - 14 of which were from UA&P.

U-Turn: ScaryAdSpeak began in 2001 as seminar on the importance of values advertising for Communication Arts students of Letran. In 2003, it opened its doors to other colleges and universities in Metro Manila. Over the years, its delegates have benefited from the insights of various advertising practitioners, including Emily Abrera, Chairman Emeritus of McCann-Erickson; Minyong Ordonez, Founder and former Chairman of Basic Advertising; Yoly Ong, Group Chairperson of Campaigns and Grey; and Jimmy Santiago, Managing Partner of TBWA \ Santiago Mangada Puno. This year, the the AdBoard joined the fray, adding a screening of the 2006 Araw Values Awards and the AdSpeak competition to the programme.

In case you still haven’t figured out what the three images here are, here’s a clue - they’re winners. Entries from UA&P-IMC students took the top three spots, remember? Now, which image took which spot, I’ll leave that for you to figure out.

The Lesson

Catch Kultura’s next major theatrical production: Eugene Ionesco’s “THE LESSON”, directed by Tinette Villanueva, which opens on November 9 (Wednesday) for an 8-show run until November 14 (Monday).A young Pupil (GABRIELLE REYES) arrives, excited for her first lesson with her new tutor - a tightly-wound and timid Professor (EDGAR ALAN ZETA-YAP). At first, the student seems promising and bright. However, as her limitations become evident, the professor’s frustration and aggression grow. Though an obsequious Maid (MARIE PUYAT) warns the professor not to get carried away, the professor’s exasperation leads to his increasingly ridiculous teachings, and the day’s lesson takes a perilous turn.

Ionesco’s 1951 classic one-act comedy helped usher in the Theater of the Absurd, a movement in dramatic literature based on existentialist philosophy. The playwrights loosely grouped under the label of the absurd endeavor to convey their sense of anxiety and wonder in the face of a bewildering universe. The surreal situations portrayed in their works aimed to shake viewers out of their conventional lives of everyday concerns. The movement’s development was strongly influenced by horrors of World War II, which showed the impermanence of values, shook the validity of conventions and highlighted the precariousness of human life.

“THE LESSON” is the 11th major theatrical production of Kultura, an arts center lodged in UA&P’s Office of Student Affairs. In addition to the shows, discussions on the Theater of the Absurd will be conducted on the play’s opening date (November 9, Wednesday), for those who are interested in learning more about the movement.
